Our principals and methods

Getting Married in Portugal are a Planning Service company and we are proud to say that our working principles and methods are quiet unique!

1. Best prices possible :

Unlike most other wedding planners we are not an agency and we do not mark up or re-sell any service we may book for you. We did not become wedding planners because we wanted to sell you someone elses service. As we do not buy and re-sell, we are not obliged to add VAT to any service you buy from us, meaning that we really can get you the best price. We only invoice you for our own service to you, which is, the planning of your wedding.

We can also include a payment forwarding, control and overview service . This means you don’t have to pay 10 different service providers, we will do this on your behalf once we have recieved the cleared funds from you.

Whatever level of service you choose you can be assured that we will strive to achieve the best possible price for you from the venue/service providers. The prices we can offer you from the service providers are often discounted rates  that are offered to us as wedding planners.  As we have previously mentioned, we will always pass on these discounts to you, our customers.

2. Intermediating  with  common sense!

We are planners and  negotiaters and we use our experience and expertise to ask the right questions and to ensure everything has been thought of when we plan your wedding.
You may, however,  have questions that are better handled directly between you and the service provider. You may want to meet your hairdresser, your photographer, your musical entertainers and your florist before booking them, either in person, on the phone or via a video call, we are happy to arrange this for you!
Over many years of wedding  planning we have learned that it’s important to step aside at times and take notes of any agreements between the couple and the service provider, instead of trying to transmit every bit of information.

3. Liability and Trust:

When we established our rules and principals we became aware of the important issue of liability and trust. One reason that an agency has to mark up prices is  because they add a  “risk factor” premium. This means that if anything goes wrong the client can complain and ask forcompensation from the wedding planning agency. Although, at first sight, this can make you feel comfortable and you may believe that the service rendered by a company that you can claim on if anything goes wrong  is somehow safer. You may, however, realise that the reality of having a scenario where you  have to claim for anything  that has gone wrong isn’t very promising.

Generally there are many contractual clauses that take the liability off of  the agencies and we also abide by this.  A wedding planner cannot be responsible or liable for things that aren’t in his/her powers. Everyone involved in a wedding is liable for their service and in the case that a service provider cannot deliver, their service is sub-standard or is not in accordance to the agreement previously made, then the aforementioned service provider(s) is/are liable.   The wedding planners from Getting Married in Portugal will act as intermediarys and will help and advise you in case of a complaint.
Information on complaints or dissatisfaction about a venue/service provider is important information and is recorded and analyzed by us after each wedding and may affect our future reccomendations.

4. Your choices:

Many agencies offer a limited choice of  standard suppliers to minimise the risk of  working with a supplier for the first time. There is also more work involved if you book  a service provider for the first time.

Getting Married in Portugal Wedding Planners wish to offer our clients more options and not be limited to a small selection of service providers. We will continue to find, research and check out new service providers to offer you greater choice and, at the same time we will advise you of whom we have worked with before and what our previous experiences with that service provider have been like.

We use the same principals for the ceremony locations. We are happy to inquire about wedding options at your favourite church or other location. We do go the extra mile and find out if it’s possible instead of giving you only limited options!

5. How we would like to work with you:

Every couple are different, some want to have a lot of the arrangements left in their own hands whilst others want us to plan and advise on everything. We want to work the way that’s best for you.

We need you to trust that you are in good hands with us, but of course we have to prove that we are trust-worthy. On our website there are many testimonials that previous clients have written about the experience they have had with our service. We have had excellent feed-back from many directions and we realise that this has a lot to do with knowing “both” worlds. Our clients come from many different countries and cultures and they sometimes find it amazing that a service provider in Portugal can take three weeks to answer an e-mail or that the answer to a direct, clear question could be: Maybe, it depends or other vague answers. We are quite familiar with this kind of response and we know how to deal with this type of situation.

When you decide you want to book our service we will ask for a deposit of 20% of the total value (for all packages with a value above € 500). This is the commitment we ask from you, you will be able to see our commitment to you from our on-going planning of your wedding. The remaining balance is to be paid before or on the wedding day.

To enable GMIP to be competetive and to remain the best value for money wedding planners in Portugal we can only offer our full level of support and experience to customers who have entered into a contract with us.

Whilst we realise that the Internet is a great business tool, it is also open to abuse and fraudulent use. We wish to reassure you and also get to know you so please ask your wedding planner for a video conversation, this often helps to get an impression of who we are. We are all real people!, have various backgrounds, and are happy to tell you more and show our face!

One word about new staff at GMIP: I choose the people that work for Getting Married in Portugal under various criteria, but my first question is “Would I let this person plan my wedding”. The greatest effort is made to transmit the necessary tools and instructions on the wedding planning and as in every place everyone will have a first wedding at some point and we just want to ensure you that all newly trained planners are guided and accompanied by an experienced planner for there first weddings.

Some personal last words from Melanie Reeg (founder and Manager):

I personally started my wedding planning life through joining a company that had a big name, but actually did very little to help us newly trained planners  do a good job. It was a true survival camp, and I did survive :-)

I founded Getting Married in Portugal out of the true desire to be better than that and offer a better service.

Before I count what’s in my bank account I need to know I have done a good job!

One last word about the work we do: A wedding planner is kind of behind the curtains, you often do not see the things we do and therefore  might  feel that we haven’t done a lot.
The truth is if nothing goes wrong then that is usually because the planning was correct and someone has been working hard. We are proud to keep all the troubles away from the bride and groom as we just want you to have a great planning time and rather than contacting you when a problem arises we contact you once we have dealt with it.

We hope that our working principals are according to what you consider valuable and we would be honoured if you decide to choose us as your planners.

Sincerely

Melanie Reeg
